Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is supplied by large industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures must be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a forklift battery. Complete protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be located close to the charging area. The route to the station should not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a charging area and battery, open flames are not allowed. Do not allow objects such as matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
